The Chair, the Stairs, It Led Me to This Lesson
I was trained not to ask for help. Like most women raised in the 70s. And I’ve become very aware of it recently.
This photo? It’s a chair I moved to the top of the stairs on Friday. Alone. And I'm 57! What was I thinking?
I am a woman, I know. And I wanted to get it done, yes. But I have plenty of wonderful neighbors I could have asked. Many of them—especially my fellow women—would’ve been more than willing to lend a hand.
But I’m not sharing this to brag or impress you.
I’m sharing this to impress upon you two powerful realizations that brought me into focus:
- It was a struggle. It was difficult. Inch by inch, I had to strategize, maneuver, and protect. My vision was limited. I couldn't see what I couldn't see. It took immediate, on-the-spot decision and execution. It took grit. It took tenacity and a fierce conviction.
- I didn’t have to do it alone. Halfway through, I questioned if I could even finish. I was alone in the middle of something quite significant. I was carrying this heavy load on my back in my little townhouse, again, alone. And when that chair finally landed at the top, I realized something: Asking for help wouldn’t have been a failure. It would have been brave. It would have been wise. It would have been human.
This experience mirrored so much of what I witness in today's world of health and wellness. Here's a little reflection...
1) Is my strategy sustainable? The strategies we have acquired from a plethora of sources aren't strategies at all. Whether it's the actual dieting industry or the latest and greatest fad. They aren't geared toward bio-individuality. They aren't helping us with strategies that sustain, maneuver, or protect our bodies at all. There is no vision, and the knowledge is limited. Conviction or not.
2) Isn't the goal pure joy? Asking for help can get us to achieve our healthy goals a lot quicker. Joy is the goal, isn't it? Quick is good, yes. But when I say quicker, what I mean is letting go of all the traps we fall into. Traps aren't joyful. Seeking real solutions is pure joy. What I mean by solutions is to uncover the root causes, discover the hidden layers of mindset, and finally let go of tightly held patterns. What I'm talking about is pure and loving. What I'm talking about is joy-filled sustainability.
What I do in functional nutrition is reflected in moving that chair up a flight of stairs. And through my counseling services, I provide the strategy, the knowledge, and the vision. Beyond what you can see.
