The Wiz Review - Theater
The Lyric Stage’s production of The Wiz brings about a world of nostalgia for the audience as they ease on down the road with the Scarecrow, Tinman, Cowardly Lion, and Dorothy herself; and pure magic happens when you give such a well-known world a bayou flair. As Dorothy journeys to find her way back to Kansas, she stocks up on friends who create a visual journey of their own. From voodoo and Mardi Gras to jazz and hip-hop, Dorothy’s adventure through Oz is reminiscent of a trek one would take down Bourbon Street. The dark metallic balconies and pillars of the set provide the perfect contrast for the over the top visuals created by the characters and the ever-present gate to the Emerald city amongst the dark stage is a constant reminder of what is at stake for the quartet throughout their travels. Even with the design concept being so spectacular, how can I talk about this show without also talking about the talented cast and their magnificent ability to bring Oz to life. There was a beautiful continuity between the actors; not only were their voices simply stunning but the connection between them felt like a family, it felt like home. If you are looking for a break from the humdrum catch The Wiz at The Lyric Stage through July first. #LyricStage #TheWiz #BostonTheatre
